Mission and objectives
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the United Nations’ global development network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. It is on the ground in 177 countries, working on solutions to global and national development challenges. UNDP China assists China in developing its own solutions to the country’s development challenges and works to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by reducing poverty, strengthening the rule of law and democratic governance, and by promoting environmental sustainability and South-South Cooperation.

Context
Globally, only about one-third of students in STEM-related fields are girls. Without the full participation of women in technology, we cannot fully leverage the advantages that technology provides to advance sustainable development. And what’s more, as our world becomes increasingly digitalized, women will be left behind in how the future is designed. That is why, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in China launched the “HER Digital Future” Bootcamp. This initiative aims to provide opportunities for girls aged 12-18, to acquire digital skills and knowledge while learning about sustainable development and how various forms of technology can be applied for good. In particular, we are focusing on bridging the digital divide and offering support and training to girls in rural areas with the help of volunteers from across China.
